Bakamen-odori: A Japanese festival you don't know about
July 29, 2018, Sunday, I was excited to take photos of the excellent annual festival called “Bakamen-odori” in Funabashi, Japan.
In this festival, a lot of floats can be seen in a parade. The masked dancers and musical accompaniment are on the floats which are being towed by people.
In one of the floats is a boy wearing a comical mask of a man called “HYOTTOKO". He is playing a fisherman who cannot catch fish because the weather is bad. He looks off the coast with his mouth puckered.
The pair of a boy and a girl in a happy mask is called "WARAI-MEN”. The boy is portraying a fisherman who is happy for having a big catch.
A teenager is wearing a mask of a wife who is happily waiting for her husband to go back from fishing at the shore.
In this event, various Japanese stands are everywhere. This stand is selling masks of Japanese animation characters.
A boy masked as an ogre called “ONI”. He is looking a float and wants to dance on it.
