Nijo Castle (Nijo-jo) in Kyoto, Japan

Nijo Castle is a flatland castle in Kyoto, Japan. 
It has several gardens and lots of important screen paintings on gold background. However we are not allowed to take photos of screen paintings. It was a pity that we were not allowed to take photos.

Karamon is a type of gate seen in Japanese architecture in Nijo Castle. They are often used as entrances to Japanese castles.

Ninomaru Palace in Nijo Castle has an area of 3300 square meters and consists of five separate buildings and is built almost entirely of Hinoki cypress.

Honmaru Palace has 1600 square meters. The complex has four parts: living quarters, reception and entertainment rooms, entrance halls and kitchen.
The Honmaru Palace has been built around 400 years ago. Due to several earthquakes that hit the country, the government prohibited entrance to the palace to preserve its structure which may have weakened over time.

The castle has several gardens and groups of cherry blossom trees and Japanese plum trees.

Nihonmaru garden was designed by the landscape architect and tea master Kobori Enshu. The garden has a large pond with three islands and features numerous carefully placed stones and to topiary pine trees.

The Seiryu-en garden is the last part to be developed part in Nijo Castle. It was constructed in 1965 in the northern part of the complex. It has two tea houses and more than 1000 carefully arranged stones.

Nijo Castle is a very famous place for foreign tourists. When I visited the place, almost  all of the visitors were foreigners.Unfortunately, It was a terrible hot day, The temperature was over 35 degrees. It wasn’t an ideal day to tour the gardens.
I only hope the tourists would experience wonderful Japanese culture.
