Ponto-cho, Japanese historical area in Kyoto

I have been to Ponto-cho in Kyoto last summer vacation. It is located at the center of the city. The following pictures were taken in Ponto-cho district.

Ponto-cho is the Japanese traditional entertainment district in Kyoto, known for Gaisya and home to many Geisya houses, traditional tea house and restaurant. The district is famous for the preservation of various forms of tradition architecture and entertainment.

Gaisya are traditional Japanese female entertainers who act as hostesses and whose skills include performing various arts such as classical music, dance, games and conversation, mainly to entertain male customers.

Almost all of the shops were not open because I went to Ponto-cho district during the daytime.

Cutlet Restaurant
This is a cutlet restaurant.
Many shops have a lantern. A lighted lantern means the store is open.

The display in front of the restaurant
The display in front of the restaurant is flowers floating in the water in a stone hollow.

Closed sign in front of the restaurant
Fresh Japanese peppers displayed in front means the restaurant is already closed. This also shows that the restaurant got good peppers this day.

Plovers pattern of lantern
Plovers pattern is a symbol of Ponto-cho.

An alley in Ponto-cho
There are some bars and restaurant in an alley. The depth of alley has a unique Japanese atmosphere.
